Star Moms' Tiffin Rules: What Kareena, Shilpa and Soha Say They Feed Their Kids

What Kareena Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty and Soha Ali Khan have said about feeding their kids, plus Rujuta Diwekar's grandmother test, turned into a simple tiffin plan.

It's 6:40 on a school morning, the dosa batter is running low and someone is asking for "the same tiffin as yesterday, but different". Somewhere in the middle of that chaos, most of us have scrolled past a headline about what a Bollywood mum feeds her children and wondered, just for a second, whether their mornings look anything like ours. So we went and read what the mothers themselves have said. Not the gossip, only their own words.

The short answer When star mums talk about their kids' food, the rules sound surprisingly familiar: home-cooked Indian meals like khichdi, idli and dosa, seasonal fruit and vegetables, sweets kept for the weekend, and children involved in cooking. None of it needs a celebrity budget. It needs a plan, a steel box and a bit of patience.

What does Kareena Kapoor Khan feed Taimur?

In a 2019 conversation with nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, Kareena described herself as "hyper paranoid" about her son's food. She said Taimur ate home-cooked food, "khichdi, idli dosa... healthy kind of home-cooked food", and that she planned it month by month: "Every month I alternate it accordingly. Whatever fruits and vegetables he should be eating in the month." She also admitted, laughing, that he wasn't allowed to eat at birthday parties, and added "that's also wrong", as reported by the Hindustan Times. Saif, for the record, pointed out that "he eats chips though".

We love that exchange because it's so honest. The plan is strict, the reality is chips, and both parents know it. That's every Indian household we've ever met.

What is Shilpa Shetty's "sweet discipline"?

Shilpa Shetty Kundra is famous for her Sunday binge posts, and she has explained where they came from. In an interview with Brut, reported by Zoom TV in 2022, she said the Sunday treat "started off to kind of encourage my son to avoid sweets on weekdays". At home they call it the "sweet discipline": jaggery is allowed, and sweets with refined sugar are kept for one day of the week.

Years earlier, writing as guest wellbeing editor for Femina, she called her son her toughest food critic: "if it doesn't pass him, it rarely makes it back to the table." One of her go-to meals for him was fish curry with brown rice and a little ghee, with steamed French beans on the side.

The plan is strict, the reality is chips, and both parents know it. That's every Indian household we've ever met.

How does Soha Ali Khan get her daughter to eat healthy?

Soha's answer is about involvement rather than rules. Asked by the Times of India how she makes sure her daughter eats well, she said she plans "healthy meals and snacks in between", and that her daughter is "very fond of participating in the process of the food being prepared". Their shared treat is a cake she bakes with healthier swaps, a spiced almond, banana and jaggery cake.

Any parent of a fussy eater will recognise the trick. A child who has washed the cucumber or stirred the batter is far more likely to eat it.

What does Rujuta Diwekar say should go in a tiffin?

Kareena's nutritionist has written a whole book on children's food, Notes for Healthy Kids. In an interview with The Indian Express, she explained her "grandmother test": food that is local, in season and cooked in your own kitchen with traditional recipes. She is blunt about packaged snacks, saying she sees ultra-processed food for children "as big a threat as smoking", and she makes a case for traditional sweets like nachni laddoo, besan laddoo and nariyal barfi, which bring millets, pulses, nuts and ghee with them.

You don't have to agree with every word to take something useful from it. A homemade laddoo in the small compartment is a perfectly good school snack.

How can I pack a healthy tiffin like the star mums?

Put their rules side by side and a simple pattern appears. Here's how we'd turn it into a weekday tiffin plan for a normal family:

  • Start from home food. Poha, upma, idli, a paratha roll, curd rice. If it's dinner-table food, it's tiffin food.
  • Rotate by season. Make a short monthly list of fruits and vegetables that are in the market now, the way Kareena described.
  • Give sweets a day. One small treat day takes the daily argument out of the morning.
  • Let them help. Ten minutes on Sunday spent rolling laddoos or choosing fruit means fewer full boxes on Monday.
  • Use compartments. A bento-style box keeps the main, the fruit and the snack apart, so nothing goes soggy and children can see what's there.

How we can help

We can't make the batter for you, but we can make the box easier to love and harder to lose. Our bento tiffin boxes have separate compartments for the main, the fruit and the treat, and our waterproof name stickers for school are made for boxes and bottles that get washed every day, so the tiffin has a better chance of finding its way home.
