The Monogram Trend: Why Celebrity Kids' School Bags Carry Their Names and Initials

Monograms went from status symbol to school bag trend, helped by celebrity posts. Where it came from, and how to personalise a school bag without risking safety.

Scroll through any back-to-school week on Instagram and you'll spot it: pastel backpacks, matching lunch bags and pencil pouches, each one stitched or printed with a child's name or initials. Celebrity parents post them, mum-bloggers copy them, and by August half the playground is carrying a letter on its back. So where did the monogram trend come from, why are famous families so fond of it, and does it actually make sense for a school bag in India?

The short answer Monograms have been a status symbol for over a century, and fashion brought them back as a quieter alternative to big logos. Celebrity parents like Khloé Kardashian have posted personalised school bags, and the idea has caught on. For school, initials do something practical too: they make a bag easy to identify without broadcasting a child's full name.

The monogram is old money with a new outfit. "In the nineteenth century, monograms were a sign of wealth," writes Kimberly Schlegel Whitman in her book Monograms for the Home, quoted by Vogue. She adds that by the fifties the sewing machine had made them easy for everyone, and that "in a time when so much of what we have is mass-produced, a monogram can make something unique".

Fashion history follows the same curve. Monograms were made popular in the twenties by designers like Jean Patou, then fell out of favour when big brand logos took over, before coming back on the Paris runways, according to Vogue's spring 2015 report. The appeal is simple. A brand logo says what you bought. Your initials say who it belongs to.

Which celebrity kids have personalised school bags?

The best-known example came from the Kardashian family. In August 2024, Khloé Kardashian shared a video on her Instagram Stories of her daughter's back-to-school collection: colourful backpacks and lunchbox bags printed with the child's name, as reported by People. Two years earlier she had posted personalised bags and pencil cases from the brand Stoney Clover Lane for a first day of school, which HELLO! magazine turned into a shopping story of its own.

Closer to home, the personalised bag has become a celebrity gift. In 2023, Jr NTR thanked Alia Bhatt on his Instagram Stories for two cloth tote bags labelled with his sons' names from her children's clothing brand, and joked, "Hope to see a bag with my name soon", as the Hindustan Times reported.

We'll stop there. We're only talking about items the parents chose to post themselves, and we're not sharing any photos of the children.

One letter, a lot of love. Initials make a bag theirs without spelling out their full name.

Is it safe to put my child's name on their school bag?

This is where the trend gets interesting for Indian parents. A full name in big letters on the outside of a bag can be read by anyone at a bus stop. A stranger who calls a child by name sounds like someone they should trust. That's why many parents now prefer one of these:

  • Initials on the outside. A monogram like "A.K." is enough for your child and the class teacher to spot the bag, and means little to a stranger.
  • Full name on the inside. Write or label the full name and class inside the flap, where it helps the school but stays private.
  • No phone numbers or addresses on show. If you want contact details on the bag, put them on a tag that closes or sits inside.

Our post on how bag tags help keep kids safe at school, on buses and at daycare goes into more detail.

Five rules for a safe personalised school bag: initials outside, full name inside, no phone number on show, sibling colours, and a light bag

What makes a good personalised school bag?

A monogram is the fun part. The bag underneath still has to do its job every day. Look for:

  • Light weight. India's School Bag Policy 2020 says a loaded bag should be about 10 per cent of a child's body weight, so the empty bag should weigh as little as possible.
  • Two padded straps. Worn on both shoulders, always.
  • A front pocket for the bottle. So it doesn't leak onto the notebooks.
  • A wipeable fabric. School bags meet the monsoon, the playground and the occasional spilt dal.
  • A design they'll still like next year. Initials age better than cartoon characters.

Almost missed this Siblings with the same initials? Add a colour or a small symbol to the monogram, or use first name initial plus class, so the bags don't get swapped at the school gate.

Can I make a plain bag look personalised?

Yes, and it's cheaper than a new bag. A bag charm with initials clipped to the zip, an iron-on letter patch, or a name tag on the handle all give the same "this one is mine" feeling. Children love choosing the letter and the colour, and a bag they're proud of tends to come home with them.

Frequently asked questions

Why do celebrity kids have their names on their bags?

Personalised items are part of a wider fashion trend for monograms, and some celebrity parents, like Khloé Kardashian, have posted their children's personalised school bags on social media.

Is it safe to put my child's full name on a school bag?

It's safer to put initials or a first name on the outside and keep the full name, class and contact details inside the bag or on a closed tag.

What should a monogram on a kids' bag include?

Two or three initials are enough. For siblings with the same initials, add a colour or a small symbol so the bags are easy to tell apart.

How heavy should a child's school bag be?

India's School Bag Policy 2020 recommends that a loaded school bag weigh about 10 per cent of the child's body weight for Classes I to X.
