Buying for a girl you barely know

Class birthdays are tricky. You may have met the child twice. A named gift takes most of the guesswork out, but a few small things make it land better.

• Ask one question on the parents' group. "How does she spell her name?" is a normal question. Nobody will think twice.
• Use the name she answers to. If everyone calls Anushka "Anu", the clip should probably say Anu.
• Write the card for her, not her parents. One short line she can read or have read to her is enough.
