5 Types of Name Labels Every Indian School Kid Needs Before March

Iron-on, waterproof stick-on, bag tags, book sticker sheets and name hair clips: where each type of name label goes and how many one child needs.

Team Zootii Updated · 7 min read

By June, many families have already rebought something that was never really lost. It was just unnamed, in a classroom of thirty children who own identical equipment.

The new school session in India starts in late February or early March, depending on the board. Uniforms get stitched, books covered, pencil boxes assembled, and name labels come last: one set of stickers on the bag and bottle, everything else left unlabelled.

There are five types of name labels that cover every item a school-age child takes to school. Each is made for a different surface and a different kind of use. Here is what each one does, where it belongs and why buying all five at the start of the year is cheaper than replacing what disappears without them.

The short answer Use iron-on labels for uniforms and PE kit, waterproof stick-on labels for bottles, tiffins and stationery, bag tags for every bag, name sticker sheets for books and notebooks, and personalised hair clips for girls. Order at least seven days before school starts.

5 types of name labels at a glance

Type Best for Washable?
Iron-on clothing labels Uniforms, PE kit, shoes, socks Yes, home washing
Waterproof stick-on labels Bottles, tiffins, pencil box, stationery Yes, dishwasher-rated
Bag tags School, sports and swimming bags Not affected by washing
Name sticker sheets Books, notebooks, folders No, dry use only
Personalised hair clips Girls' hair accessories The clip is the label

Type 1: Iron-on clothing labels

What they are: heat-activated fabric labels that fuse to textile fibres when pressed with a household iron at medium heat.

Where they go: inside the collar of every school shirt and uniform top, the waistband of trousers, shorts and skirts, the PE t-shirt collar, the inside tongue of school shoes, and the wristband or back of sports socks.

Why they matter: Indian school uniforms are identical within a class and sometimes across a whole school. After swimming, sports day, inter-school competitions and overnight trips, clothing gets mixed. The only reliable way to return a blazer or PE kit to the right child is a label that survives heavy washing.

How long they last: made to stay on through regular home washing with everyday detergent, without the name fading. A label applied at the start of March will still be readable in November.

One thing to know: iron-on labels need fabric to bond to. Do not apply them to nylon, waterproof coatings or any non-fabric surface. For those, use Type 2.

Type 2: Waterproof stick-on name labels

What they are: pressure-sensitive adhesive labels rated for dishwasher, microwave and daily washing. The adhesive bonds to clean, smooth hard surfaces.

Where they go: water bottle (side and base), tiffin box (inside the lid), pencil box, stationery, books (inside the front cover), lunch carrier straps, calculator, tablet case.

Why they matter: Indian tiffin boxes go through a dishwasher or vigorous hand-washing with hot water every evening. Standard stickers dissolve within one or two cycles. Dishwasher-rated waterproof labels made for food containers last a full school year without peeling.

How long they last: 12 months of daily dishwasher cycles, if applied to a clean, dry surface and given 24 hours to cure before the first wash.

Three steps that matter Apply to a clean, completely dry surface. Press firmly from centre to edges. Wait 24 hours before washing. This is the difference between a label that lasts all year and one that peels by the second week.

Iron on vs waterproof labels: which do you need?

Both, for different things. Iron-on labels are for fabric only: uniforms, PE kit, socks and shoes. Waterproof stick-on labels are for hard, smooth surfaces like bottles, tiffins and pencil boxes. Neither replaces the other.

Type 3: Personalised bag tags

What they are: rigid or semi-flexible name tags that attach to a bag's handle, strap or D-ring. Unlike adhesive labels, they attach mechanically and are not affected by washing, humidity or abrasion.

Where they go: main school bag handle, sports bag strap, swimming bag zipper, tiffin carrier handle, drawstring bag (loop it through the drawstring).

Why they matter: school bags look identical, especially in lower classes where parents buy the same bag from the same shop in the same week. A bag tag is visible at a distance and lasts the whole school year. It also travels with the child on school trips and sports events where bags are piled together.

Zootii's range: signature style, shaped tags and rainbow tags, all printed with your child's name, in multiple colours and shapes.

Type 4: Name sticker sheets for books and stationery

What they are: sheets of smaller, non-waterproof name stickers for the covers of books, notebooks and folders, items that are not regularly washed.

Where they go: front cover of every textbook and notebook, folder cover, music book, drawing pad, dictionary.

Why they matter: class libraries, shared project books and library borrowing all mean a child's book can end up with another family. A name sticker on every notebook lets the teacher or librarian return it in under ten seconds.

One thing to know: these are designed for dry use. Do not use them on water bottles or tiffin boxes. For those, use Type 2.

Type 5: Personalised hair clips (for girls)

What they are: clips, snap clips and bow clips with your child's name printed directly on them. The label is the accessory.

Where they go: in your daughter's hair for school, and into the PE bag, school bag or pouch when removed for sports.

Why they matter: hair accessories come off for PE, swimming and nap time in younger classes. They are small enough to disappear in seconds and are almost never returned when unlabelled. A clip with your child's name is immediately identifiable and needs no separate label.

Additional use: a set of personalised hair clips makes a practical return gift or birthday gift for a classmate.

Frequently asked questions

What are the different types of name labels for school?

Iron-on clothing labels, waterproof stick-on labels, bag tags, name sticker sheets for books and stationery, and personalised hair clips for girls.

Iron on vs waterproof labels: which is better?

They do different jobs. Iron-on labels are for fabric only; waterproof stick-on labels are for bottles, tiffins and other hard, smooth surfaces.

How far in advance should I order?

At least seven days before school starts, to allow for printing, quality check and delivery. Order earlier, in January or February, to avoid the pre-session rush.

Which type of label is most commonly forgotten?

Bag tags for sports and swimming bags. Parents label the main school bag but not the secondary bags, which are the ones most likely to be left behind at an inter-school event.

Do iron-on labels need a special iron?

No. A standard household iron on medium heat (the cotton/wool setting, not maximum), with a thin cloth between the iron and the label, is enough. Use dry heat, not steam.
