A first birthday is a different kind of party

The thing we almost missed

When we first sorted the picks, we were thinking about the child. The bag that worked best was the one a parent could carry out of a crowded hall with a baby on one arm. One or two flat items in a simple bag are easier to carry than a pile of small things rattling around. That's why most of our picks are flat and why we'd skip the bag of tiny party trinkets.

What we'd skip

We'd skip anything with batteries, small magnets or loose figures for a party with toddlers in it. We'd also skip a return gift that needs a grown-up to explain it. A sticker set or a muslin cloth needs no instructions, and that matters when the guest is sixteen months old and the parent is juggling a diaper bag.
