Bhai Dooj Gift for Sister (and Brother): Ideas for Kids, by Age

Bhai Dooj gift ideas for sister and brother when the siblings are kids: picks by age from 3 to 13, real prices from ₹289, and how to do the tilak with small children.

Team Zootii · 9 min read

Every year, in the week after Diwali, a small negotiation happens in a lot of our homes. The seven-year-old sister has done her tilak practice on a teddy bear. The five-year-old brother has been told he has to "give her something". He has no money, no idea, and a strong opinion that she should get a car too.

So the gift ends up being a parents' job. And most of what comes up when you search for a Bhai Dooj gift for sister is written for adults: gold earrings, a saree, a grooming kit, a skincare set. Lovely, if your sister is twenty-eight. Not much help when she's eight and her brother is buying with your card.

This one's for the little ones. What a younger brother can give his sister, what a sister can give back, by age and budget, with real prices from our store. Plus how to do the tilak with a wriggly five-year-old without anyone's hair catching fire.

The short answer For a little sister, pick something with her name on it that she'll wear or carry every day: name hair clips (₹299 for 2), a name bag charm (₹439) or the Rainbow Diva hamper (₹799). For a little brother, a name bag tag in a design he likes (₹289) or a name water bottle (₹999) beats another toy car. Bhai Dooj is on Wednesday 11 November 2026. Our product pages say order by 20 October for Bhai Dooj delivery.

What makes a good Bhai Dooj gift for kids?

We've packed a lot of festive orders over the years, and the gifts kids keep have three things in common.

First, it's obviously theirs. A name on it does more for a six-year-old than a bigger box. She'll show it to her whole class. He'll tell you it's "the only cricket tag in the bus".

Second, it gets used. Bhai Dooj falls in the middle of the school term, so a gift that goes to school the next Monday keeps reminding them who gave it.

Third, it's sized for a child. No fragile showpieces. Nothing with small parts for anyone under 3.

The best Bhai Dooj gift for a child goes to school the next Monday.

Bhai Dooj gifts for sister, by age

Every price below was checked on our store on 17 October 2026.

Kids' Bhai Dooj gift picker by age: for sister, unicorn shape name tag Rs 339 (3-5), name hair clips Rs 299 (5-9), jelly name bag charm Rs 439 (10-13); for brother, dinosaur shape tag Rs 339, cricket name bag tag Rs 289, clicker bag charm Rs 396
Pick the age, pick the gift. Save it for Bhai Dooj.

Little sister, 3 to 5

Skip hair clips at this age. They're small, hard pieces, and they end up in mouths. A shape name tag for her school bag (₹339) is the safer pick. It's waterproof acrylic, cut in a unicorn, rainbow or birthday-fairy shape, with her name printed on. She'll point at it every morning.

Little sister, 5 to 9

This is the hair clip age. Our name hair clips come in a pack of 2, both printed with one name of up to 8 characters, in prints like Candy Stripe, Polka Dots and Rainbow. ₹299. They're decorative clips, so they're for the family lunch and the school photo, not for kabaddi.

If you want a proper "big" gift, the Rainbow Diva Hamper (₹799) puts her name on three things at once: a pair of name clips, a rainbow name tag for her bag and a beaded name bag charm, packed in a printed gift box. You type the name once and it goes on all three.

Older sister, 10 to 13

Ten-year-olds have opinions. Anything that looks "babyish" goes straight into a drawer. A bag charm works because older girls clip them onto school bags, pencil cases and tuition bags. The jelly name bag charm (₹439) strings up to 8 chunky candy-colour letters on a soft cord, with a little poodle or headphones charm on the end and a lobster clip. For just initials, the clicker bag charm (₹396, in pink or blue) has two letter tiles that click when you press them. Half accessory, half fidget.

IN: her name on her bag / OUT: another chocolate box she'll share with you anyway

Bhai Dooj gifts for brother, by age

Bhai Dooj is the sister's day, but in a lot of families the gifts go both ways now, especially with kids. If your daughter wants to give her brother something, here's what we'd pick.

Little brother, 3 to 5

The dinosaur shape name tag (₹339). Same waterproof acrylic as the unicorn one, in a dinosaur shape that suits a boy who roars at breakfast. Clip it on his school bag or his water bottle cover.

Little brother, 5 to 9

A cricket name bag tag (₹289). Waterproof silicone, 9 x 5.5 cm, his name printed on. On a rack of thirty identical navy school bags, his is the one with the cricket bat.

For a bigger gift, a name water bottle (₹999). It's 350 ml, 304 food-grade stainless steel with double walls, keeps water cool for up to 12 hours, and has a flip-top lid small hands can open.

Older brother, 10 to 13

The clicker bag charm in blue, with his initials. Boys this age won't wear a name charm, but they'll click this one through an entire car journey. Or our reusable metal pen-pencils (₹499 for 2): they write like a pencil with a replaceable graphite nib, so there's no sharpening before exams.

Swipe through the picks.

How to do Bhai Dooj with small kids

The gift is the easy part. The ceremony with a five-year-old and a lit diya is where it gets interesting. Here's how we've seen families keep it calm.

Five steps for Bhai Dooj tilak with small kids: set the thali the night before, brother sits and sister stands, tilak with the ring finger, a grown-up holds the diya, sweet then the gift swap
The tilak, kid version. Send it to the family group.
  1. Set the thali the night before. Roli or kumkum, a few grains of rice, one sweet, and the diya. Let the sister arrange it. Kids take the ritual more seriously when they've built it.
  2. Brother sits, sister stands. A low stool or patla for him, so she's at the right height and isn't reaching over the flame.
  3. Tilak first, with the ring finger. A small dot, then the rice. Practise on a teddy if it's her first time. Ours do.
  4. A grown-up holds the diya for aarti. The sister keeps her hands on the thali and the adult guides the circles. Tie back long hair and loose dupattas first.
  5. Sweet, then the gift swap. She feeds him a piece of mithai, he hands over the gift. Then the photo, before the tilak smudges.

Tip: give the younger child a job too. If the brother is the little one, let him hand his sister her gift himself, even if you wrapped it. It's his gift now.

Your family might call it something else. It's Bhau Beej in Maharashtra and Goa, Bhai Phota in Bengal and Bhai Tika in Nepal, and the customs shift a little with each. If the kids ask why we do it at all, our post on Bhai Dooj history and significance for kids tells the Yamraj and Yamuna story in a way a six-year-old will sit through.

Tie back long hair and dupattas before the diya comes anywhere near.

A few things we'd skip

  • Guessing the spelling. Is she Aanya or Anya? It's printed exactly as you type it, so check it twice.
  • Small parts for under-3s. Clips and charms aren't for toddlers. For the baby of the family, stick to a shape tag or a book.
  • Ordering in November. Personalised pieces are printed to order, and Diwali week slows every courier in India.
