Wedding Season With Kids: Outfits, Packing and Surviving a 4-Hour Shaadi

A practical plan for Indian weddings with kids this season: comfortable outfits, what goes in the wedding bag, feeding and sleep timing, crowd safety and how to keep them busy without a phone.

The card says 7 PM. The baraat reaches at 9:30. Dinner opens at 10. The pheras start after midnight. Somewhere in the middle, your four-year-old has taken off one shoe, is crying about the lehenga and has eaten nothing but gulab jamun. Most wedding with kids tips tell you to "stay calm". This one gives you a plan.

Because wedding season with kids is not about getting through without a meltdown. It is about planning for the one that is coming, so it is smaller, shorter and somewhere quiet.

What works: dress them for comfort under the festive layer, carry one well-packed bag, feed them before you leave home, decide in advance which part of the function you are staying for, and give them a small job or a quiet game instead of the phone.

The short answer Put a soft cotton layer under the festive outfit and use shoes they have already worn. Pack one bag with a change of clothes, snacks, a named bottle and a comfort toy. Feed them at home first. Pick the one ritual that matters most and plan to leave after it. Take a photo of your child on arrival and put your phone number in their pocket.

Wedding outfits for kids: festive on top, soft below

Most wedding meltdowns start with clothes. Zari, sequins and net look lovely and itch on small skin after an hour.

  • A soft cotton layer underneath. A cotton vest or slip under a lehenga, sherwani or kurta stops most of the scratching.
  • Check the inside seams. Run your hand along the inside before the day. Fold-over seams and loose sequins scratch. A strip of soft tape over a rough seam helps.
  • Shoes they have already worn. New juttis on the wedding day mean blisters by the baraat. Wear them around the house for a few days first.
  • A second outfit. Plain, comfortable, in the bag. Food happens. So do naps on the sofa.
  • Hair that stays put. Big hair accessories get pulled out within the hour. A couple of light clips tend to last longer than a heavy tikka on a small head.

Five minutes with the seams saves an hour of scratching.

Tip: do a full dress rehearsal at home the weekend before. Twenty minutes in the outfit on the sofa tells you which seam, hook or shoe will be the problem on the day.

Food: feed them before you go

Wedding buffets open late and the lines are long. A hungry child at 9:30 PM is a hard child to manage, and a hard child to love in front of the whole khandaan.

  • Give them a proper meal at home before you leave.
  • Carry a snack box for the wait between the baraat and dinner.
  • When the buffet opens, go early. Fill one plate with plain food first, then let them try the rest.
  • Keep sweets for after the meal, not instead of it.

What to pack for a wedding with kids

One bag, packed the night before. This list covers a long evening.

Wedding bag checklist for kids: ten things to pack for a long Indian wedding evening, from a change of clothes to a comfort toy
The 10-item wedding bag. Save it, or send it to the cousin with three weddings next month.
  1. A full change of clothes, including innerwear
  2. Wet wipes and a hand towel
  3. Two handkerchiefs
  4. A small water bottle with their name on it, so it does not vanish from the table
  5. A snack box: plain biscuits, fruit, something they will actually eat
  6. A light shawl or jacket for the outdoor lawn after 10 PM
  7. Safety pins and a few hair ties
  8. Any regular medicines, and a small first-aid pouch
  9. One quiet game or book
  10. A small comfort toy, if they have one

The comfort toy matters more than it looks. Children hold on to familiar objects in loud, unfamiliar places. We wrote about why in why children get so attached to certain things.

The wedding bag is not for the bride's side or the groom's side. It is for the 10:45 PM version of your child.

Sleep: decide your exit before you leave

The pheras might be at 1 AM. That does not mean your toddler has to see them.

  • Pick the part that matters most to your family: the haldi, the baraat, the jaimala or the pheras. Plan the day around that.
  • Shift the nap. A late afternoon nap on the wedding day buys a few hours in the evening.
  • Have a sleeping plan. A quiet room, a car seat, a grandparent who is leaving early.
  • Go home. Leaving before the pheras is normal. Nobody will remember who left at 11.

Children's sleep needs vary by age, and late nights add up over a wedding week. The American Academy of Pediatrics has a clear guide on how many hours of sleep children need if you want to plan the week around it.

If there are three functions in four days, protect the morning after. A slow breakfast and no plans until lunch is how the next evening goes well.

Wedding with kids tips for crowd safety

Wedding venues are big, loud and full of people who all look like relatives. Children wander.

Five rules to keep children safe in a big wedding crowd: photo on arrival, phone number in pocket, meeting point, one adult on duty, watch the edges
Five rules for the wedding crowd. Forward it to the family group before the baraat.
  • Take a photo of your child in their outfit when you arrive. If they go missing, that is what you show people.
  • Put your phone number in their pocket, written on a card. Older children can learn it by heart.
  • Agree on a meeting point, like the stage or the main gate. Tell them what to do if they lose you: stay still and ask a woman with children, or a staff member at the counter.
  • One adult on duty at a time. "Everyone was watching" usually means nobody was. Take turns.
  • Watch the edges. Pools, generator sets, parking areas and the stage steps are where accidents happen.

Keeping kids busy at a wedding without the phone

Phones work, until the battery dies or a cousin wants a turn. A few things buy real time.

  • A job. Flower girl, ring holder, in charge of handing out the shagun envelopes. Children behave better when they have a role.
  • A spotting game. Find the horse, the band leader, a red turban, the bride's shoes.
  • A small drawing kit. A notebook and four crayons. Ask them to draw the bride.
  • The other children. A corner where cousins can sit together, with one adult nearby, does more than any toy.

A corner, some cousins and one adult nearby. Better than any phone.

If you want a ready-made spotting game, our I-Spy At the Restaurant board (₹279, for ages 3 to 6, 8 x 5.5 inches, acrylic) fits in the wedding bag and works at a buffet table. The whole range is in the I-Spy games collection. Prices checked on our store on 13 October 2026.

The same tricks work for the relatives' visits in between functions. Our relatives' visits checklist covers the house version, and if your child goes quiet with new aunties, read what to do when a shy child will not say hello.

The hair clip question

If your daughter is going to six functions in a month, her hair is going to be done six times. Light clips stay in better than heavy pieces, and a name on them means they come back from the dance floor.

Our personalised Candy Stripe hair clips are a pack of 2 for ₹299, with her name (up to 8 characters) printed on both. They are decorative clips, so they are meant for a festive outfit, not rough play. More designs are in the hair clips collection.

Swipe to see the clips and the wedding-bag game.

Personalised orders take 8 to 12 working days, so order before the first function on your calendar, not the week of it. Orders over ₹399 ship free.

Nobody remembers who left before the pheras. Your child will remember whether the wedding felt fun or frightening.
