Picture it: you have found the cutest alphabet hair clips, you are halfway through checkout, and you type your daughter's name. A-N-A-N-Y-A. Six letters. The box stops at five.

That is the one thing most parents miss about alphabet hair clips for girls. Every letter is a chunky little charm of its own, and a clip is only so long. So before you fall for the look, count the letters.

The short answer Our alphabet name hair clips come as a pair, both clips spelling the same name in soft pastel letters, up to 5 characters. A pack of 2 is ₹335. For names longer than 5 letters, our printed name clips take up to 8 characters from ₹299.

What alphabet hair clips actually are

Each clip is a lined snap clip with letter charms fixed along the top, one charm per letter. You type the name, we spell it out on two matching clips, one for each side of her head. The letters come in assorted pastels: pink, lilac, mint, lemon, peach.

Honestly, they are the most fun thing we make. Kids who are just learning to read will point at their own clip and spell it back to you. That alone is worth the price.

The 5-letter rule, and how we thought about it

We get asked why five and not eight, like our printed clips. Here is the thinking. A printed name sits flat, so a longer name just gets a slightly smaller font. A letter charm cannot shrink. Add a sixth and seventh letter and the clip either sticks out past her hairline or the letters crowd and look messy. Five letters is where it still looks neat on a small head.

So if her name is longer, you have three good options:

  • Use the name she actually answers to. Most kids have one. Anu, Riya, Mishi, Tia. A pet name on a clip often means more to her than the full name on a form.
  • Use initials. Two or three letters look bold and graphic on a clip.
  • Switch to printed clips. Our printed name clips take up to 8 characters, so Ananya, Vaidehi or Shrinika fit in full.

The thing nobody mentions: assorted means assorted

The pastel colours are mixed across the letters. You choose the letters, not which letter gets which colour. If your heart is set on an all-pink name, these are not the clips for that. A printed clip in one print is the safer pick.

We mention this because "colour different from the picture" is one of the complaints we see most often on kids' hair clip listings on marketplaces. We would rather you know before you order.

Our honest take on who should buy which

Short name, loves colour, reading age: get the alphabet clips. She will spell them out to everyone she meets.

Long name, school uniform, wants a matching set: go printed. They are flatter, take 8 letters and sit better under a school hairband. Skip the letter clips for sports days; chunky charms and a tight ponytail are not friends.

Before you order either, write the spelling down and read it back. We print exactly what you type, so "Tiya" and "Thiya" are two different clips.
